The Nigerian government threatened CNN broadcaster with sanctions over its report on the alleged shooting of protesters at the Lekki Toll plaza in Lagos, Punch outlet reported on Thursday.

According to the outlet, the government called the report describing the 20 October events as "irresponsible journalism."

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, reportedly said at a press conference that there were no deaths at the protests.

The #EndSARS rallies across Nigeria ignited after numerous claims implicated the country's Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) police unit in acts of killings, torture and blackmail.

The department was disbanded by the authorities and replaced with the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) squad. Nonetheless, the protests continued against other forms of police violence.
