Roma are ready to revive their interest in Manchester United defender Chris Smalling with the following a successful takeover of the club according to reports.

The 30-year old joined the Serie A side on loan last summer and impressed during his debut season in Italy, with Roma keen to secure his services permanently.

United extended Smalling's loan until the end of the league season but the former England international will not feature in the remainder of Roma's Europa League campaign and is expected to return to Manchester.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted that Smalling could stay at the club despite the defender's preference to stay in Rome. Thus far, Roma have been unable to meet United's valuation due to their financial troubles.

However, Calciomercato report a deal could be revived after the club was sold by former owner James Pallotta.

The Italian outlet claim Roma's hopes of securing Smalling's signature have returned as extra transfer funds have been made available following a buy out by American billionaire Dan Friedkin.
