Gunmen have killed sixteen human beings and injured 9 others at a village in Sokoto close to the border with Niger, a local official and a resident stated Friday.


The predawn assault on Tara village, in Sokoto state, is the fresh in a series of assaults through crook gangs recognized domestically as "bandits" who for years have terrorised communities, killing, pillaging and kidnapping humans.


"The gunmen got here on bikes and opened fire on the village," stated resident Lawwali Umeh.


"We buried sixteen dead bodies this afternoon. Nine others are badly injured," Umeh added.


A professional from the area, Saidu Naino Ibrahim, showed the death toll, announcing the injured have been being dealt with at a hospital.


"The attackers took away extra than one hundred cows," he added.


The lawmaker stated the bandits had come from Dogon Zango, in neighbouring Zamfara state.


Bandits are recognized to operate out of camps in Rugu forest, which straddles Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Niger states.
